Tohda sat on the dock looking out at the sea.  The sun was setting now, giving the sea a beautiful orange shine, much different than the usual blue.  He kicked his legs as they hung over the lapping waters below him, his loose leggings flapped in the gentle sea breeze.  He sighed again.  He thought back on the day.  He'd only been on the island a few minutes before he easily located the main headquarters for the PCBC competition.  There were tons of trainers and Pokemon gathered around and were chatting with each other....though there were so many, Tohda wasn't sure how many actually made it into the competition....heck, he didn't even know if HE had made it into the competition.  Though just a few hours ago, he got the answer to that question.

He had been walking around the beach, to size-up the city and the island, the sun was still high in the air at the time.  Tohda was trying to chase after sand crabs when a large shadow flew over him.  He looked up and had to block the sun from his eyes to see a Skarmory land in the sand.  It squawked a greeting, though with some difficulty because it was holding a card in its beak.  Tohda approached it.  He had to smile because it reminded him of his own little Skarmory back home that he was raising.  It was fairly weak compared to how strong this Skarmory looked, but they both had equally smooth and shiny feathers.  Their steel-quality seemed to reflect light just as well as any mirror.  Skarmory nudged its head toward Tohda, indicating that the card was for him.  He reached out and pulled it from the Pokemon’s beak and looked it over.  The card contained information on his first-round opponent.

Tohda jumped with excitement that he had been accepted, but recalled that Skarmory was still there.  He gave a small bow,

“Ah, thank you Skarmory.”  He looked up.  Skarmory gave him a strange look before kicking off the ground and flying off back into the city.  Tohda looked back down at his card.  It contained a picture of his opponent and a listing of his Pokemon.

“Lewis Vanderfield, hmm?  …looks like he likes to use bigger Pokemon,” Tohda commented to himself, thinking of his smaller-sized Pokemon.

For a while, he walked around the city, trying to find Lewis, finding his way around all the buildings.  He stopped sometimes to watch a couple battles happening already, they were really inspiring, making him want to find his opponent faster.
Finally it started getting to sunset, and that’s what brings us to the present.  Tohda got tired of searching and sat down on the dock.  …and so he did.  Tohda was starting to consider finding a place in town to sleep when he noticed a figure running down the beach in his direction.  Tohda adjusted his glasses to get a better look and quickly recognized it as his opponent.

Finally!’ he thought.  Tohda jumped the short distance off the dock into the sandy beach below and began walking toward his opponent, not really much for running.  As they started getting within eyesight of each other, Tohda waved, and Lewis waved back.

Seems like a nice enough guy…’ Tohda thought cheerfully.  The two met mid-way down the beach, a few yards away from the dock.  The gentle orange waves lapped almost silently on the shore, the golden sun was one-third below the horizon already.

“Hey there,” Tohda said, “…I’ve been looking all over the city for you for the past few hours.”

“…oh, well, somebody said they saw you out here on the beach, so I’ve been out here looking for you,” Lewis explained. The two considered this a moment and chuckled at the ridiculousness of them searching for each other in different places.  Finally, Lewis offered Tohda his hand,

“I’m Lewis.”

“Tohda. Tohda Parsh.” Tohda replied, shaking his hand, “What say we just battle right here on the beach?  It’s almost dark, so I figure we both will want to find somewhere to stay before then,” he suggested.  Lewis seemed to consider this.  He looked around at the beach.  It was wide enough from the city to the ocean for a battle, but only offered the soft sand as a battleground, but with the ocean adjacent, it could make for an interesting battle.

“…all right sure.  Right here then,” he said at last.  Tohda nodded,

“Three on three, isn’t it?” He asked.  Lewis nodded.  The two walked a distance from each other.  The setting sun gave the field a unique look that one can only see at sunset.  The waves continued to lap the shore, blissfully unaware of what was about to happen at their bank.

“Ready?” Lewis called.

“More than ever!” Tohda replied.  Lewis and Tohda took out their first Pokeball, and after an unheard count-down to battle, tossed them out into the sands between them.

“Go,  Luke!” Lewis shouted, calling his Gallade to the field.

“Let’s go, Porygon-Z!” Tohda called, sending his Porygon-Z out.  Porygon used its Download ability to sense Luke’s lower defense and raised its Attack.

“Luke, Psycho Cut!”

“Porygon, wait for the attack and use Conversion2!”

The two battle orders seemed to come simultaneously, Tohda’s coming only slightly aver Lewis’ to make sure he was attacking.  Luke seemed to go from a still, battle-ready stance to full speed without any kind of resistance.  He seemed to run right through the sand as if it were a solid surface.  He drew his arm back as the blade on his elbow glowed a fuchsia-color.  He was a foot away from Porygon in only a second, and used his arm-blades to cut across Porygon’s body.  Porygon tumbled backwards in the air, but was able to quickly recover, as he floated back into position, his body glowed the same fuchsia color as Luke’s arm a few moments ago as Porygon changed himself into a Psychic-type.

“Now, Nasty Plot then Zap Cannon!” Tohda called.

“Luke, Hypnosis!” Lewis retaliated.

Porygon worked-out some ‘nasty’ thoughts, helping raise his special attacking power as he charged a concentrated ball of electricity.  Meanwhile, Luke stood his ground as he began concentrating, focusing on Porygon to lull it to sleep.  However, Porygon was moving in the air too quickly for Luke to get a good shot at him.  Too busy concentrating on trying to put Porygon to sleep, Luke wasn’t able to dodge Porygon’s Zap Cannon, the ball of electricity hit him square in the chest.  Had Luke not been so set in the ground, the force of the attack would have surly knocked him over.

“Psycho Cut again!” Lewis called.  Luke launched itself toward Porygon again, spraying sand out all behind it as it ran.  Because he was already so close to Porygon, Tohda didn’t have a chance to call for another attack before Luke attacked it again.  Since Porygon was a psychic-type now, though, the attack wasn’t as effective this time.

“Dah-ha!” Tohda laughed, “Aerial Ace!”  With exact speed and precision, Porygon shot itself strait forward in the air, flying at Luke at a high speed, fast enough that even as Luke dodged, he hadn’t moved fast enough and Porygon rammed across his torso, severely hurting the part fighting-type.  Luke skid back a short distance in the soft sand as it recovered from the hard blow.

“Another Aerial Ace, Porygon!” Tohda called, more positive about the battle now.
“Shadow Ball!” Lewis called, realizing his previous mistake of using Psycho Cut after Porygon had used Conversion2.   Already heading-in for the attack, Porygon was already making a direct flight path toward Luke.  Luke, on the other hand, had begun charging a ball of energy not too different from Porygon’s Zap Cannon, but this ball was black in color, and seemed to emit a kind of dark-energy.  Porygon was unable to alter its course when Luke unleashed the massive ball of energy at Porygon.  The force of the now super-effective attack sent Porygon flying way back across the beach, in the air.  Tohda spun around, his eyes following Porygon as it flew over his head and behind him.

“Let’s go, Porygon, cat-and-mouse tactics!” Tohda called back to his Pokemon as it floated back-up to the field, “Another Aerial Ace!”

“Luke, use Shadow Ball before it can attack!” Lewis exclaimed.  Luke steadied himself and began charging another ball of darkened energy.  But this time Porygon was too fast for him, striking another direct Aerial Ace.

“Lots of them, go! Go!” Lewis called.  Luke began making smaller, baseball-sized Shadow Balls, and was tossing them at Porygon.

“C’mon, Porygon, Dodge! Keep-up that Aerial Ace!” Tohda called.  Luke was tossing Shadow Balls all around the field wherever it could see Porygon.  Porygon continued to dodge at every turn, like an epic game of whack-a-mole.  At every free moment it had, Porygon dashed through Luke with an Aerial Ace, but Luke kept its onslaught on hard.  After a few hits, Luke began focusing more on Porygon’s movements and was starting to get a few hits in.

“Keep it up, Luke, you’re getting him!” Lewis cheered.

“Go, Porygon, go!” Tohda chanted, “Don’t forget about dodging those lava plumes back home!”  As if suddenly struck with a brilliant idea from Tohda’s words, Porygon began to alter its path.  Rather than simply dodging Luke’s attacks, it was simply moving in circles around the Gallade, and changing directions and moving up and down randomly, Gallade was no longer able to predict Porygon’s moves.  Luke continued its Shadow Ball onslaught, but its attacks continued to miss from Porygon’s spastic movements.  Finally, without Tohda having to call for the attack, Porygon rushed in for another Aerial Ace, ramming itself directly into Luke, knocking it back and tumbling across the sands.  Luke struggled a moment, but was knocked out.

“Not bad for a first round,” Lewis said to Tohda, recalling Luke to his PokeBall.

“Not bad at all,” Tohda called back, grinning.

“But we’ve only just begun!” Lewis said. He pulled a second PokeBall out, but instead of tossing it into the field in front of them,  he threw it out into the ocean, “Go, King!”

Tohda only managed to just barely see the Empoleon’s fins as it immediately dived into the water.

“Get out there!” Tohda called to Porygon, pointing at the sea.  Porygon obeyed, floating out over the water.  It looked around the water uncertain, it couldn’t see King anywhere.  Tohda and Lewis ran to the shore, facing the sea where the battle had been moved.

“King, Aqua Jet!” Lewis called to the sea.  Tohda was unable to call for a defensive maneuver, King’s attack came too swiftly.  From a short distance from Porygon, the water was suddenly kicked-up as if a speeding boat were moving through the water.  King was moving so swiftly that with the spray of the water, his body could hardly be seen, but he scored a direct hit on Porygon, sending it tumbling across the waves.  Porygon managed to recover before it hit the surface, but it looked badly damaged.

“Zap Cannon!” Tohda called, concerned for his Pokemon. Porygon began charging another ball of electricity. But before he could, Lewis called,

“Aqua Jet again, King!”  Appearing from beneath the waves again, King charged forward, striking Porygon before it could complete its attack.  This time, Porygon was hit so hard that it fell into the water.  After the mist from the Aqua Jet and the splash of Porygon hitting the surface, they could see Porygon floating on the water, knocked-out already.

“Goodness-me, that was fast.” Tohda said in disbelief as he recalled Porygon.

You fought well, Porygon-Z…we can handle things from here, ’ Tohda thought, replacing Porygon’s Pokeball with his next choice, “Go Castform!”
The tiny gray Pokemon materialized floating above the waves.

“Cast! Cast!” It called in excitement.

“Rain Dance, Castform!” Tohda called.

“King, Blizzard!” Lewis yelled.

Castform activated a power hidden deep within himself, as he did clouds appeared from nowhere, blocking their beautiful sunset, and began pouring rain all over the battlefield, Castform transformed itself into its rain-form.  After gaining some power for the stronger attack, King used some of the falling rain and transformed it into a powerful Blizzard attack.  The attack was a direct hit, but wasn’t very effective against Castform’s watery-body.  After, it dived under the water again.

“C’mon, King, keep evading under the water.  Get a clear shot and use Hydro Cannon” Lewis called to the Empoleon.

“Wait for it to resurface and use Thunder, but keep moving!” Tohda called in retaliation.

The rain continued to downpour over the area, the entire surface of the water was active as each droplet hit it.  Castform was gliding through the air above the surface, keeping an active eye on the water, trying to spot King through the rain.  Every so often, it would see a shadow pass under him, but too swiftly to be sure.  Castform was beginning to get anxious in using its attack, actual thunder in the clouds could be heard as the static electricity was being prepared to strike.
Finally, King leapt-up from the water in a large splash, and without a second to pause, it fired a humongous amount of water at Castform, just as Castform itself allowed the gathering lightning to strike in an amazing flash.  Because of the rain, and King acting as a huge lightning rod on the surface of the sea, Thunder hit with deadly accuracy as King’s powerful Hydro Cannon rocketed into Castform’s tiny body.  A steam enveloped the sea as the two attacks subsided, Tohda and Lewis watched with anticipation to see how the attack turned out.

As it began clearing, they could both see the two shadows of their Pokemon out over the surface.  They both looked well beat after the powerful attacks, but still ready to finish the round.  King had to take a moment to get a quick breather after its super-powered attack.  Tohda knew the qualities of the Hydro Cannon attack and knew this was the time to strike,

“Quick Castform, while it’s recharging, use Thunder again!”  Castform began charging another attack in the downpour.  The active static in the clouds allowed for a quick strike directly onto King.  Even after the attack, bits of loose electricity crackled over the water’s surface, but King was down.  Tohda sighed in deep relief as Lewis called his Pokemon back, and strolled back to his earlier position over the sand.  Tohda signaled for Castform to return to the field as well as he walked back to his own position.  By this time, because of the rain, the sand beneath them was completely soaked and slightly hardened by the downpour.

Lewis stood for a moment, considering his next move.  He wanted to use Roy, but he knew Castform’s water-typed moves could take him out in only a couple moves…but there was still one other choice…Lewis took out the Pokeball for his third Pokemon and tossed it into the sodden sand,

“Go Spike!” He called, tossing Jolteon to the field. Tohda cursed to himself; in this storm against an electric-type, Castform was doomed to fail…he’s just going to have to hold Spike off until the inevitable.

“Castform, Ice Beam!” Tohda called. Lewis became aware, now, that he was glad he hadn’t also called out Leonard or Dragonite,

“Spike, Thunder Fang!”

Castform charged up its icy attack and shot it at Spike.  However, the Pokemon was far too swift and Castform was only able to just graze Spike’s side.  Spike rushed forward, the wet sand easier to run on, swiftly and jumped at Castform, biting into its head.  When he bit down, a stream of electricity surged from Spike into Castform, causing a lot of damage.  The attack was too much for Castform, and it wasn’t able to retaliate, it floated unmoving in the air, paralyzed from the attack.

“C’mon, Castform! Weather Ball!” Tohda called, but Castform seemed unable to respond.

“Thunder, Spike!” Lewis called; he knew he had Castform down.  Using the clouds that Castform himself had created, Spike summoned a lightning bolt from the excess amount of static electricity and struck Castform who was unable to avoid the attack, its water-body taking full damage.  Once the lightning bolt cleared its attack, Castform quickly fell to the ground, knocked-out. Tohda laughed,
“Taste of my own medicine, eh?” He recalled Castform.  Lewis chuckled on the other side of the field; Spike was beaming, waiting for Tohda’s last Pokemon.  Obviously, the lot of them were getting soaked in Castform’s rain.  Tohda had to think about his next move…none of his remaining Pokemon knew any ground-type moves, and none of them had any real advantage over Spike…but there was still one little trick that might work.

“Go, Wobbuffet!” Tohda said, he was grinning.  Wobbuffet materialized on the wet sand.  Paying no attention to the rain, it shouted,

“WOBBUFFET!!” and smacked its forehead.  Lewis was caught off-guard for only a moment; all sense of seriousness in the battle seemed lost because of this amazingly comedic appearance.  He very quickly, of course, regained his composure.

“Quick Attack, Spike!” He called.  With speed even greater than Luke’s at the beginning of the match, Spike flung itself forward moving so quickly, it hardly even left footprints in the sand.

“Counter, Wobbuffet!” Tohda shouted as Spike ran forward.  Wobbuffet’s body glowed a deep red color as Spike came in contact.  Though Wobbuffet took some damage, Spike was tossed back as if it had been attacked as well.

Crap, these Wobbuffet are tough, I’ll have to take it out before it takes ME out…’ Lewis thought to himself.  He looked up, it was still raining, but looked as if it was almost finished, ‘may as well make use of this storm before it passes…

“Spike, Thunder!” he called.

“Mirror Coat!” Tohda called confidently.  Spike repeated its moves from when he was fighting Castform and summoned a strike of thunder down on Wobbuffet.  Just before the attack hit, a glow, this time pink, emitted from  Wobbuffet.  It took the hit, but a force blew away from him as a pinkish wave of energy shot from Wobbuffet and struck Spike with twice the force that it had it Wobbuffet with.  Just seconds after, Castform’s power fell and the rain stopped.  The clouds began breaking apart, and golden rays from the sunset started shining through once more.

As one would survey the scene, it looked as if Spike had been taken a lot more damage, since all his moves were being returned to him two-fold.  Wobbuffet was a little scuffed, but appeared to be doing okay and was still smiling.

“Thunder Fang!” Lewis called.  Spike rushed forward, ready to jump at Wobbuffet.

“Counter again, Wobbuffet, dear!” Tohda said with some slight arrogance.  Spike leapt at Wobbuffet, its mouth gaping and ready to bite.  It fell on Wobbuffet’s bulbous head, but the deep red glow returned, repelling Spike after only a nibble, tossing it back, rolling across the sand.  It stood again, still with some fight left.

“Agh,  Quick Attack!” Lewis called.

“Counter~” Tohda said, sing-songedly.  Spike dashed forward for another attack.  It didn’t attack directly, but instead ran around Wobbuffet, trying to confuse it.  Wobbuffet, a patient-Pokemon by nature, simply waited for the attack with mild interest.  Spike jumped at it from Wobbuffet’s left, but was repealed away with little damage to Wobbuffet herself.  Spike tumbled down the sand, which was starting to dry.  Spike, again, attempted to stand, but its legs gave-out beneath it, and it fell to the ground, not disturbing the moist sand.  The battle was over.  The two trainers sighed as they recalled their two Pokemon, one in relief, the other in disappointment.  They both knew the battle could continue and be epic as all get-out, but the rules dictated the best of three.

“Not bad, my friend, I was sure that I was going to lose that one on several occasions,” Tohda commented, offering his hand.

“I thought I surly had you there with Jolteon…but that Wobbuffet…that was a surprise,” Lewis commented, taking his hand.  The two chuckled as they shook hands, officially ending the battle.

The two departed, wishing each other the best of luck in their futures.   Tohda walked into the city, the sun was almost gone by this time, and he still needed a place to stay for the night.  As he walked the emptying streets, he began to think of how he would describe the battle to Benton whenever Beedrill returned,

So Benton!  I had my first battle…and by-golly if it wasn’t an extremely close fight…
